Denis McMahon

Denis McMahon is a two-times Tasmanian Open Winner and three-times Tasmanian Lightning Champion.  He has won the annual Burnie Shines chess tournament twice and placed second in the 2014 Neville Ledger Tasmanian Tournament.  He was the  Burnie Chess Club player of the year in 2012, and Devonport Chess Club player of the year  from 2014 to 2017.

In 1996 Denis placed 9th in the world, and 1st in the southern hemisphere, in a competition sponsored by Informant magazine to identify, in order, the 10 most beautiful games played in the first 64 issues of Informant. He is a former President of the Chess Association of Western Australia and has been the TCA president since 2013.  He also currently serves as the Devonport Chess Club's Director of Play.

Denis spent most of his working life as a teacher of English and Literature in Western Australia, before retiring to Tasmania.  He is also known as the author of idle & drunk in heaven, a selection of his poetry, and has represented Australia in debating as a member of the Australian Schools team, the Australian Universities Team, and the Australian National Team.

Denis is married with two daughters (and two grandchildren) and lives in a house called Fairmount.
