Mr Michael (Mike) Midson
Mike started playing chess when he was 11 at Hobart Technical College (New Town High) and competed in many inter school-competitions.
“I like chess because it has many challenges” Mike comments.
Mike’s interest in chess continued when he joined the Hydro Chess Club in 1961 at the age of 16.
“Competition was keen in those days with 5 clubs operating in Hobart area and in the North and North West as well. The standard of chess very high. It was a time when chess was challenging and very competitive.” Mike explains.
After a few years the Hydro Chess Club became the Sandy Bay Chess (SBCC) club at which Mike was a club Champion for a year. Mike still plays competitive chess, but enjoys a good social game and some banter just as much.
Outside of chess Mike worked for the Education Department for 22 years until his retirement in 2014. He still works as an usher at the Theatre Royal where he’s been working for over 45 years and keeps himself busy as a volunteer.
