At Hobart Chess Club last night the Michael Midson Cup, a perpetual trophy for the winner of the Club Champs, was presented by Michael to Tan Thanh Nguyen.

Michael’s service to chess in the Hobart area is unparalleled and will surely not be matched.

I’m told that as a young man starting out as a clerk for the ANZ bank in Lindisfarne, Michael was volunteered to look after the cash, for a chess club associated with the Hydro. That would be in the 1960’s. Since then, Michael has been a fixture as Treasurer for the Sandy Bay Chess club in the 1980’s and took up the same post when Sandy Bay merged with the HCC in 2002.
